One-Spoke Wonders Always Perish
Picture a bicycle wheel with one spoke. You roll down a smooth road and you're fine. Hit one pothole? The whole wheel collapses and you go down with it.
That's most agents right now. One lead source — usually past clients and sphere — and when it dries up, the business dies with it.
We've seen it hundreds of times in coaching. Agents whose sphere was built around their kids' school, then the kids graduated. Agents crushing it in a neighborhood that went out of style. The #1 REO agent in California who did zero normal listings for five years, then the REO spigot turned off. Relocation agents who lost the contract when the corporate client got acquired.
Never Build Your Mansion on Land You Don't Own
Instagram changes its algorithm overnight and the 7,000 reels you scripted become invisible. YouTube shifts and generalist influencer channels watch their views collapse 50%. Zillow raises the referral fee, drops the lead quality, and if you built your team around Flex, you can't stop playing their game.
You don't own the platform. You don't own the algorithm. You don't own the portal. You own your effort and your skill — that's it.
AI is about to flood every one of those passive channels with cloned voices and cloned faces reading scripts cloned from the top-performing videos. If your whole business is passive, you're already losing the race.
Passive vs Proactive — Know the Difference
Passive lead generation is waiting. Waiting on the algorithm. Waiting on the Zillow ping. Waiting on the pumpkin pies to produce a referral. Waiting on the postcard.
Proactive lead generation is you picking up the phone and going after people who already have their hand in the air — people who already said yes, I need to sell. Expireds. FSBOs. Notices of default. Probate. Divorce. Relocation forced moves.
If it's meant to be, it's up to you. That's the whole mindset shift.
The 5 Spokes That Actually Build a Wheel
Start with past clients and sphere. Every agent needs it, even if it's just a call once a month (scripts inside Premier Coaching — costs zero dollars, beats the pies). This is the regret spoke — the #1 thing top producers wish they'd built better.
Spoke two: expireds. More of them right now than at any point in the last 20 years, most sellers are equity-rich, and you rarely have the "bring a check to closing" conversation we used to dread.
Spoke three: market-dependent proactive. FSBOs (we'll cover Dr. FSBO and Mike Pachetti tomorrow). Small and mid-size builders who used to skip listing agents because homes just sold — they're getting caught in the shift and they're listable right now. Probate attorneys. Divorce attorneys. Assisted living reps.
Spoke four and five: whatever else produces for you. Open houses. Relocation. A paid source that actually closes. Strengths stay strengths. Weak spokes stay weak — build around them.
When the Going Gets Tough, the Smart Leave
Old saying was "when the going gets tough, the tough get going." That's wrong in this market.
When everyone in your office is singing the blues about rates and days-on-market, that's the signal to go the opposite direction. Herd-following agents spiral down with the market. They never beat it.
